CatiehomeJenny Wilkins, the mother of Catie Wilkins, remembers her daugthers last holidays as she battled cancer.  “Catie’s favorite tradition at Christmas time was when her elf came to visit”, says Jenny Wilkins.  The family decided to share that tradition with other families facing the same struggles as their little girl.  Watch the video to see the full story on “Elves From Catie” and how the program is touching the lives of others.

Mustaches for Kids: A Fun Way to Help Support CURE

normal_button_2Mustaches for Kids is an annual Mustache-growing fundraiser that is held in cities throughout the United States and Canada.

Each year, participants (”Growers”) raise money by growing Mustaches between Thanksgiving and Christmas. They shave their faces, except for the Mustache, a minimum of one time per week. The Growers solicit donations from friends, family, co-workers, and people in the community.

At the end of the Growing Season, Mustaches for Kids hosts a party, called The Stache Bash, where the facial hair is evaluated by an independent panel of judges, and one Mustache is declared to be the “Sweetest.” Other Growers are recognized for raising the most money and for having the worst mustache. Over the past eight years, Mustaches for Kids has spread across the world, a steady expansion that is not unlike the measured, deliberate growth of a Mustache.

Mustaches for Kids has enjoyed the efforts of an impressive number of Growers normal_card_frontwho, collectively, have raised over $150,000 for children’s charities. The Atlanta chapter of Mustaches for Kids has chosen to raise money for CURE Childhood Cancer.

CURE Honors Allison Guy

Today CURE Childhood Cancer honors Allison Guy, the daughter of Diona Guy. We wanted to share this sweet little angel’s story with you.  If you want to share your story on how childhood cancer has personally affected you, please email us

Allison’s story, written in her mother’s words:

IMG_2360Allison is the youngest of our 3 daughters and was diagnosed on Feb. 4, 2009 with ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia). Her symptoms began the end of 2008 and consisted of knee pain, fatigue and crankiness. She wasn’t interested in playing or interacting with others anymore and she just wanted to be held most of the time. In January 2009, she became sick with a respiratory infection that she just couldn’t seem to fight. We were in and out of the pediatrician’s office for about 3 weeks. On January 30th, her fever spiked to 103 so we were back to the doctor again the following day and finally had blood work done. The labs proved something was wrong but they couldn’t tell me exactly. On February 4th, we received the news of her diagnosis. This is the day that the whole world changed for my family and I. It is a day that I will never, ever forget.

What a journey we have been on. Up to this point Allison has endured 1 surgery, 4 bone marrow aspirations, 12 spinal taps, 7 ER visits, 6 hospitalizations, 25 weeks of intense chemotherapy, 2 platelet transfusions and 8 blood transfusions. We have finally entered the maintenance phase and are very happy to be here. No child should ever have to go through what we witnessed Allison go through during the last 7 months. As a parent, a cancer diagnosis can be the worst words we ever have to hear about our children. It is a tough road but I am so thankful for how Allison and our other daughters have handled everything.

IMG_2364Allison is my hero as are all children fighting cancer. She has handled it all with grace, dignity and patience, qualities that have taught me so much about life. She is a wonderful little girl and I look forward to a beautiful, healthy life that we will continue to share together. I am honored to be her mother!

Kendrie's 10 for 10

Unknown-1Kristie Escoe’s family was a CURE Childhood Cancer beneficiary when her daughter was first diagnosed with cancer. Her daughter Kendrie was diagnosed with ALL when she was four years old.  She was treated at Scottish Rite, and finished treatment almost four years ago.  Last week she turned ten years old and Kristie asked people to donate $10 for ten, in honor of Kendrie, and in support of CURE Childhood Cancer.  Below is Kendrie’s story, written in her mother’s words.

“Once upon a time, in a land far, far away there lived a fair princess with her family.  She was pretty stinking cute. A few weeks after this photo was taken, the princess woke up one morning, and she had cancer. What followed for this young girl and her family was two plus years of chemotherapy treatments.

Here is a brief summarization of a few of the numbers of her treatment

-Number of ambulance rides Kendrie has taken: Two.

-Number of days she has been inpatient during treatment: Twenty-five.

-Number of times she has been stuck in the chest, arm, or leg, for flu shots, peg shots, arac shots, blood draws, or chemo: 115.

-Number of blood transfusions she has received during treatment: Eight

-Her preventative antibiotic, Bactrim, she takes in a liquid form. How much has   she taken over the past twenty-six months? Three and a half gallons.

Unknown-2Why am I telling you this? Because the beautiful princess we talked about in the beginning of this story, turned 10 yesterday.  Thanks to advances in pediatric cancer treatment, and some luck, she wasn’t one in five who lose their battle to cancer.”

Connor's Letter

Below is a sweet letter CURE Childhood Cancer received from a boy attending St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Ridgeland, MS. It was so touching and innocent that we wanted to share it with you.

Dear CURE Childhood Cancer,

One of my friends at my school has a little cousin named Lilly, who is a nice, young girl who likes to go over to my friend’s house to play. One day, when I was eight, I was over at his house when she came over and I noticed she had pretty short hair. Later that day, my friend told me that she had cancer when she was younger. I was somewhat surprised to hear this because she seemed to be really happy and playful. It was hard for me to picture her in a hospital bed with cancer. She shows people that no matter what a person’s age or size is, they can still fight and beat cancer. I’m a thirteen-year-old boy now, and I really want my generation to find the cure for cancer. I think this organization is helpful and important because it can inspire people to fight cancer and donate to help find a cure. I would like to support this charity because it helps children with cancer get through everyday, and that would make me feel pretty good if a person outside of my family cared about my life. There’s no question that if someone found a cure to cancer, thousands of lives would be saved each day.

Sincerely,

Connor Woodall

Junior Beta Club Spreads Childhood Cancer Awareness

Beta 010A special group of middle school students team up to raise awareness for childhood cancer when their own classmates are affected.

The Junior Beta Club at Worth County Middle School asked their students to bring in any spare change to donate to CURE Childhood Cancer.  The fundraising was in memory of Adam Giddens, who lost his battle to cancer.  Adam was the son of Terry Giddens, a teacher at the Middle School.  The students were also donating in honor of Christopher Oates, (who is) a student currently battling Ewing Sarcoma, a form of childhood cancer.  All-in-all the students collected a total of $450.00, which they donated to CURE.

We greatly appreciate everyone at Worth County Middle School who donated, as well as the Beta Club Officers, who decided to help raise awareness of childhood cancer at their school and honor both Adam and Christopher.
