CURE Invites Families to Join in Fundraiser and Awareness Initiative "CURE's Kids Conquer Childhood Cancer One Day at a Time"

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – but many people (too many people!) have no idea that cancer affects children, much less that a Childhood Cancer Awareness Month exists.  CURE Childhood Cancer is planning a fundraising and awareness initiative to raise awareness of childhood cancer and CURE during the month of September, and we would like to invite our families to participate.

We are very excited to announce the second annual “CURE’s Kids Conquer Cancer One Day at a Time.”  This initiative is a way for our families to get involved and help raise awareness in our community about the problem of childhood cancer and much needed funds for research. Each day in September, CURE will highlight a very special child in our CURE family who has been affected by cancer.  Some of the children we highlight are currently fighting the battle, some are children who have finished therapy and are living the cure, and others are children who have lost their battles but will be loved and remembered always.

For families who wish to participate, CURE will feature your child and his or her story on our website, blog and Firstgiving fundraising page.

CURE will set up a Firstgiving fundraising page especially for each child where donations can be made in honor of that child on or for their special day in September.  Our goal is to raise $2,000/day each day ($1,000 for each child featured) to help fund research which will lead to better treatments and cures for childhood cancers.

Families who participate will help in spreading the word about their child’s day to their network of friends, family and co-workers and encourage them to support the day by helping to reach or exceed the $1,000 per child goal.

If you would like to participate, please contact Lisa Branch at lisa@curechildhoodcancer.org.

Get Music – Give Hope

The best introduction to Stanton Lanier is to first listen to his music before you listen to his story. Stanton’s stated mission, to offer “peace and rest in a hurried world,” is accomplished through storytelling, but not in words. His stories are told through instrumental melodies on the piano, transporting a global listening audience to that unique interior place that brings peace to each person’s life and circumstances. Many of his live performances are coupled with exquisite pictures of nature that create a powerful sensory experience.

Music to Light the World is the non-profit organization Stanton founded in 2004 with a vision to offer “peace to the soul” through scripture inspired piano. This organization brings peace, hope and healing to many who need it most through donating CDs and performances to groups such as cancer patients, families who have lost children to cancer, hospitals and inner city ministries. Get Music, Give Hope is an initiative where, for every album purchased, Music to Light the World donates one album to a cancer center or hospital. Music to Light the World is gaining strength and support from prominent philanthropists in Atlanta and beyond who are equally dedicated to touching lives with a message of hope.

The song “Peace” on his award winning CD “December Peace” was written by Stanton because of his friendship with CURE board member Alan Thomson on the night Hayley Thomson earned her angel wings. Stanton Lanier has generously donated a CD for each mom attending “A Tribute to Our Quiet Heroes” this year.

A Trendy New Way to Support CURE Childhood Cancer

HopeWatch.org is a non-profit organization which strives to make a difference in this world by giving back to the community.

Why watches? When Dyan Smoltz went to Italy on a trip, she noticed the trendy hot new item was this clever waterproof watch that came in many colors and sizes. Everyone was wearing them! So she bought them for her four children, two of whom are teenagers, and all of their friends wanted one. Later, Dyan’s daughter needed to raise money for a mission trip and thought she could sell the watches to raise money to pay for the trip.  Dyan thought this was a great idea. Then one day over coffee, Dyan and several of her friends were brainstorming about giving back to the community. She suggested using the watches to raise money for many worthwhile endeavors, not just one mission trip.

Needless to say, HopeWatch is making a difference one watch at a time. For each watch sold, HopeWatch is giving back to the community, supporting different charities locally, regionally, and globally. Whether you purchase a HopeWatch for yourself, for friends, or for a fundraiser, you’ll be helping people all over the world.

Smoltz shares the organization’s mission, “It’s all about community. Based on a premise that we could start a business to raise money for others, we began. We wanted to use our gifts and talents to do something bigger than ourselves and in doing so, give back to our community.”

HopeWatch has been generous in adding CURE to its list of charities it is supporting! So every time you purchase a watch online, CURE receives a 20% donation.

And even better, you can now pick up a HopeWatch right here in Atlanta!  Golsen Family Dentistry and All Around Gymnastics in Atlanta are selling the watches on behalf of HopeWatch and have both chosen CURE Childhood Cancer to be their charity!  So you can purchase a HopeWatch at either of these businesses or online and CURE will benefit.

Grab a watch for yourself, your friends, your family members or your co-workers and support CURE Childhood Cancer at the same time!

Visit http://hopewatch.org/ to purchase your HopeWatch now!

*Don’t forget to be sure and select CURE from the charities drop down menu when you select your watch size.

Volunteer Spotlight: Elesha Bateman

This on-going Volunteer Spotlight series highlights one of much-appreciated volunteers at CURE Childhood Cancer that goes above and beyond the call of duty to make a difference for our organization and in the world of childhood cancer.

I began volunteering for CURE Childhood Cancer after watching a sweet friend almost lose her child to leukemia. I had an almost desperate need to do something, anything to help her.  I could do meals and I could pray.  I could listen…but I needed to do more – I needed to make a difference for my friend.  The more I learned about childhood cancer and the more families I met through my friend, my need became more desperate.

And then, CURE held the first A Tribute to Quiet Our Heroes luncheon.  I sat on the first host committee and have continued volunteering on every host committee since.  I love our event and what it means to all of us.  That luncheon in 2005 has since led to many other opportunities to volunteer with CURE.

For me, volunteering honors my friend and so many others like her that I have grown to love, by never giving up this fight for their children, for my children, for the future.

If you find yourself “desperate”, I encourage you to jump in.  Join the Quiet Heroes committee, become a volunteer with CURE Childhood Cancer, work an Open Arms dinner, donate.  You’ll get so much more than you could ever give…I promise.

—Elesha Bateman

From the Desk of Kristin Connor

In these complex economic times, it has become increasingly common that organizations cannot succeed alone, and many nonprofits are embracing the concept of collaboration for mutual benefits. Indeed, collaboration has become quite the buzzword in the nonprofit world as the economic crisis has gripped our country and resources to support charitable efforts have continued to shrink.

However, collaboration is nothing new to CURE Childhood Cancer. Maintaining collaborative partnerships with other organizations has been a longstanding practice for CURE. CURE was founded in 1975 by Dr. Abdel Ragab, the first pediatric oncologist at Emory University. Because of the urgent need to fund a pediatric oncology research program at Emory and to provide support for families afflicted by childhood cancer throughout Georgia, Dr. Ragab organized a group of parents who formed CURE.

CURE’s first mission was in partnership with Emory and was to help raise funds for a special microscope and other equipment to assist in diagnosing different types of childhood leukemia, using newly developed techniques. In 1978, CURE contributed $20,000 to purchase the microscope and related research equipment. Additionally, CURE was soon able to provide partial support for the training of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellows during their research rotations.

From 1975 to 1981, the childhood cancer research lab was located at Grady Hospital. Since most of Dr. Ragab’s patients were being treated at Emory Clinic, CURE provided a significant donation in 1981 to establish a research lab on the Emory campus. This was designed as a temporary facility while plans were made to build a permanent lab on the campus.

Finally in 1987, a new outpatient clinic for childhood cancer was opened on the campus. Over several years, CURE raised more than one million dollars to build and equip a laboratory on the second floor of the pediatric oncology clinic. The Childhood Cancer Research lab was dedicated in 1989 and represented a huge step forward in providing an up-to-date facility with almost 3,500 square feet of space devoted to research in childhood cancer, the first of its kind at Emory.

Under Dr. Ragab’s leadership and with CURE’s backing, the childhood cancer research program at Emory continued to grow and soon became one of the largest pediatric oncology programs in the country in terms of patients diagnosed and treated each year.

From those early days and continuing today, CURE has worked collaboratively  and cooperatively with the staffs at children’s hospitals in Georgia and beyond to provide important support to families. We also work with other wonderful organizations like Camp Sunshine, Ronald McDonald House and Remember the Rainbows, meeting regularly to discuss the activities of each organization, assess the needs of the children and families we serve and the collective resources available and determine collaborative means to address the needs.

We firmly believe that the more we are able to work together successfully, the more we will achieve our goals of helping families suffering at the hands of cancer navigate the difficult road they are traveling and the faster we will be able to achieve our mission of curing this dreaded disease. Every step in that direction counts.

With hope,

Kristin Connor

Press On to CURE Childhood Cancer: A Named Fund Truly Making a Difference

In 2007, Stephen and Erin Chance created CURE Childhood Cancer’s first “Named fund.” Their son, Patrick, had been diagnosed with Stage Iv Neuroblastoma at three years old. After realizing the dire need for funding for pediatric cancer research, the Chances created Press On: The Patrick R. Chance fund for Neuroblastoma Research to combine their fundraising efforts with the shared vision, experience, and success of CURE Childhood Cancer.

The Press On fund mission changed in an ironically positive direction in 2009 when Tara and Turner Simkins, dear friends of the Chances and early supporters of Press On, joined forces with the Chances as a result of their son, Brennan’s, diagnosis with AMl on the eve of his seventh birthday. During Brennan’s bone marrow transplant, and after Patrick had been off therapy for only three short months, Patrick’s cancer returned. Then, just three months later, Brennan relapsed. Both boys and their families and supporters are fighting to find a cure.

The Chances and Simkins have shared a friendship practically their entire lives. Now they also share the mission of the Press On fund. The brutal irony of their sons’ battles with cancer underscores their firm belief that their continuing experience “in the trenches” with their boys offers a providential opportunity to help raise money which can be targeted directly to therapies and trials which can make a difference now. from this perspective, their lives will be always changed for the better, relying on the strength of true friendship and faith to Press On through any circumstances for a CURE.

As a result of the generous support of family, friends, and a community of supporters, The Press On fund has directed several hundreds of thousands of dollars to promising research for neuroblastoma, specifically Dr. Donald Durden’s research of Pl-3 Kinase Inhibitor and Targeted Therapies for neuroblastoma conducted at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Press On has also directed $20,000 to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to support a team of dedicated neuroblastoma researchers investigating antibody therapies.
