CURE Childhood Cancer a partner in the Stop Childhood Cancer Alliance

Cancer. It is a battle too many of our young children and teenagers must face every day. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children from birth to age 15. Each year, more than 10,000 new cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed—approximately 46 children and adolescents every day.

CURE Childhood Cancer is proud to team up with many other organizations focused on childhood cancer initiatives for the Stop Childhood Cancer Alliance, a new initiative this year, as part of the efforts we are working on year-round and for September, National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The Stop Childhood Cancer Alliance wants to see these statistics change. We hope to be the driving force in increasing awareness of childhood cancer and enhancing support for the young people fighting this disease—and the clinicians and researchers who are helping them.

Gov. Nathan Deal will sign a proclamation declaring September Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Throughout the month, get involved by making donations, volunteering or working with individual member organizations of the Stop Childhood Cancer Alliance, which include:

Golf Tournament Hosted to Honor Rachel Wang

Rachel Wang’s friends and neighbors recently hosted a golf tournament to raise money for CURE Childhood Cancer in her honor. Rachel is 7 years old and was diagnosed with ALL in Oct. 2010. The tournament was held at Bear’s Best in Suwanee on Saturday, July 30 with 50 players participating in the 4 player scramble.

The tournament was truly a family affair with all of the Wang family pitching in to help that day. CURE’s Sharon Bryan attended the event to sell CURE merchandise. She said “Rachel was so precious…she sat by me at the table and gave each player a brochure and package of mints when they checked in…and then she would whisper to me, “Ask them if they want to buy a CURE hat.”

Despite the rain at the end, everyone enjoyed the event and over $3,500 was raised for CURE in Rachel’s honor! We would like to the thank Arris for the sponsorship of this event, and all those that made this event possible!

CURE Family Joins Allan Vigil Ford Lincoln for Soap Box on the South Side

On Saturday,  July 30, Allan Vigil Ford Lincoln hosted the Soap Box on the South Side Demonstration Race at their Morrow Dealership.  As special guests, the Powell family was invited to attend the event.

The derby was an opportunity for Treshon, his twin brother, Trevohn, and parents, Stanley Powell and Leslie Brown-Powell, “to enjoy a day out, without needles and doctors.”  Since Treshon is currently at Egleston and could not attend the event, his brother raced in his honor.

Leslie Brown-Powell, 44, of Stockbridge, described seven-year-old Treshon’s cancer as “rare,” as it affects only three children out of 1,000 in the U.S.

“He’s been in a hospital for the most part of July,” she said.

The mother, who is studying cardiovascular radiology at Sanford-Brown College, in Dunwoody, said she had to take a leave of absence from school when she learned of Treshon’s illness. The family traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio, earlier this year, so Treshon could receive a liver transplant on Mother’s Day.

Leslie appreciates what CURE Childhood Cancer is doing for her family, and others, by contributing to the Soap Box Derby.

“They’re trying to get the word out about the cancers that are striking kids,” she said. “This is huge. I have been looking for a way to get his story out, for him and other kids like him.”

The 28th Annual Care Affair Raises $64,000 for CURE!

In 1983, the Delta Delta Delta Atlanta Alumnae Chapter (“Tri Deltas”) hosted the first annual “Care Affair,” a dinner dance and auction to benefit CURE Childhood Cancer.  Inspired by Dr. Abdel Ragab, CURE’s founder, and his drive to find cures for childhood cancers, the Tri Deltas were delighted to raise $13,000.

Twenty eight years later, the Tri Deltas are still at it.  Atlanta alumni of all ages, from schools all around the nation, meet to raise money to support Dr Ragab’s dream to end all cancer in his lifetime.

Atlanta Tri Deltas have raised more than $1.7 million dollars for CURE and watched the cure rate rise from 20% in the 1960s to nearly 80% today. Long time Tri Delta Alumnae Lynn Lanier reflects, “Like every one of you, parent, friend, fundraiser, we gather together to pray our united efforts see the CURE in this decade.”

The 28th Care Affair was held April 9, 2011 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth with approximately 180 attendees.  The event included a wonderful sit down dinner, silent and live auctions and an energetic band.  The speaker was Lauren Gearon, a survivor of Aplastic Anemia, CURE board member, wife & mother!  Lauren’s story inspired all with her walking example of how cutting edge research leading to just one option for children who have none other can and does save lives.  Jill Becker and Jeff Hollinger from 11Alive emceed the live auction which included 3 priceless painted planters by 3 cancer patients – Sarah Barr, Katherine Athanassiades, and Ana Hardt.  The event was successful due to all the sponsors and auction donors, resulting in a donation to CURE of $64,000.

CURE is grateful to all of the Tri Deltas who work tirelessly to continue the wonderful tradition of Care Affair.  We are particularly grateful to all of the 2011 sponsors and donors  and extend a heartfelt thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Tom Jewell who have sponsored this event for all 28 years  and Balfour Beatty which has donated more than $25,000 in the past 5 years!

Ferrari Maserati of Atlanta Provides “Rides to Remember”

© 2011 Shari Zellers Photography

For the past six years, Ferrari Maserati of Atlanta has hosted a one of a kind driving event designed to bring joy into the lives of children battling cancer.  “Rides to Remember” was exactly that, as childhood cancer patients and their siblings took once in a lifetime rides in exotic sports cars like Ferraris, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Aston Martin’s and Jaguars to name a few.  On June 4, 2011, in partnership with CURE Childhood Cancer, Camp Sunshine and Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities, and through the generosity of volunteer owner-drivers, more than 100 children participated in a thrilling and memorable motorcade with full police escort, photographers, food and fun.

The inspiration for the event came from within Ferrari Maserati of Atlanta’s family when the daughter of one of the owners was diagnosed with neuroblastoma.  The first event involved around 18 cars and 15 children.  This year’s event involved more than 100 cars and drivers who provided a police-escorted ride from Perimeter Mall to Ferrari Maserati of Atlanta in Roswell.

Once the convoy of exotic vehicles arrived at the dealership, three award winners were announced.  One award was given to the car the kids deemed “the coolest”, another to the driver who “Bribed the Judges” by making the larges charitable contribution, and the third to a car picked by exotic car enthusiasts. The kids were treated to Dreamland Barbecue and received a complimentary photograph of themselves behind the wheel of a Ferrari.

Lisa Branch, Director of Patient & Family Services, says the outing provides the youngsters and their families welcome relief and a chance to do something unique.

“Anything we can do to ease their burden for a little while is wonderful.  We are so grateful to Ferrari Maserati and all the volunteer drivers for giving so generously to our families,” Branch said.
