CURE’s Kids Inspire Hundreds of Donors

This September marked the third year of “CURE’s Kids Conquer Cancer One Day at a Time.” And for the third year, the featured children inspired hundreds of people to join their fight against childhood cancer.  We are thrilled to announce the 71 families participating in CURE’s Kids raised an astounding $263,000 in the month of September.

“While I am truly humbled by the amount of money that was raised, I am not surprised. When you read the stories of these children and their families, there’s just no way you aren’t going to be inspired and want to help,” says Kristin Connor, CURE Childhood Cancer‘s Executive Director. “This initiative has had a huge personal impact on all of us at CURE. It’s helped us to really get to know some of our families better and to understand on a deeper level each journey of each family. We empathize so much with them, but as our understanding deepens, our ability to provide impactful support also improves.”

Sharing the stories of CURE’s Kids every day throughout the month of September resulted in a truly meaningful and impactful Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We still have a way to go to raise community awareness more broadly, but we are making inroads. Thank you for spending September reading about CURE’s Kids and supporting them with your donations. What a difference you all have made.

Couture for a CURE

Norman Zapien from Zapien’s Salon recently hosted an amazing event, Couture for a CURE, to benefit CURE Childhood Cancer. This retro fashion show featured 16 models, styled by NJoy Boutique and bou-cou jewelry and photographed by Angel Photography. The event took place at Spotlight Theatre in Greensboro, Georgia, and it was a full house!

One of CURE’s kids, Ava Kelly, is 13 years old and has been in remission for a while. Her mom participated in the event’s finale, where she got her hair cut on stage by Norman Zapien himself. It was quite the performance!

During the event, a CURE video played for the attendees as well as a slideshow of all the CURE’s Kids Conquer Cancer children. Because of the success of the event, Norman Zapien said he would love to do the event again next year and make it even bigger, better, and raise more money for CURE. We can’t wait!

Thank you to Zapien’s Salon, NJoy Boutique, bou-cou jewelry, and Angel Photography for making this event possible.

Companies that Care – TBG Design

Here at CURE Childhood Cancer, we are fortunate enough to work with many companies who are as passionate about finding a cure as we are. To show their support, these companies give back in a variety of ways. We would like to take a moment to highlight one of the Companies that Care – TBG Design.

Terry B. Gardner, a designer and illustrator with more than 25 years of experience, has been generous enough to offer her design services to CURE. You will see her latest CURE design work on the 2011 Lauren’s Run t-shirt as well as this year’s Believe holiday cards.

We asked Terry why she decided to give back to CURE:

“Terry Milling, the daughter of my dear friend Pam Milling, was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on July 1, 2009. I first came in contact with CURE through a client, Scott Martin, whose child passed away. When Terry was diagnosed, I reached out to Scott in hopes he could bring comfort to Pam. He spoke highly of CURE and friend Kristin Connor, Executive Director, and suggested Pam contact CURE for help, and she did. Because of the fine people at CURE, Pam developed some life lines through a very difficult time. I offered to help CURE with any graphic design needs and was honored to be given the opportunity. I do what I can with the talents given to me to give a little back. I wish my services were not necessary, but I am here for CURE as needed.

Thank you, TBG Design, for all of the work you do for CURE!

Board Spotlight – Jeff Brooks

CURE Childhood Cancer is honored to have a diverse and well-connected Board of Directors and we would like our community to get to know them. In this spotlight series we will highlight a board member and share why he or she is dedicated to CURE.

Jeff Brooks has been a Member of the Board since 2010. He is also the Vice President of  Arris, a global communications technology company. Jeff shared why he supports CURE:

“I first discovered CURE when I was reading every piece of literature provided in the new patient materials given to us upon our daughter Taylor’s diagnosis with DSRCT. As a teen with cancer, Taylor had many questions about treatments, support, and public awareness.  Sadly, what we found as we researched was childhood cancer is terribly underserved. Since that introduction, we have benefited from the caring nurses trained by CURE, inpatient dinners, flowers for our daughters funeral, Quiet Heroes luncheons, and a golf outing. The events are wonderful but the graciousness of the CURE staff, volunteers and the other parents with childhood cancer experience are inspiring.  Since our daughters death we have attempted to pay the graciousness forward by sponsoring seats at Quiet Heroes and participation and volunteering at Lauren’s Run and the odd volunteer opportunity or event.  But this is not enough. The evidence collected while Taylor and I researched childhood cancer made us realize that CURE is one of the very few organizations addressing the issue.  Knowing what I now know about childhood cancer, it would be a sin if I did not work toward changing research priorities and raising funds for research specific to childhood cancers.”

One Tee. One Week. One Cause.

CURE Childhood Cancer has been selected by Sevenly, an organic funding movement to raise capital and awareness for the world’s greatest causes, for their “One tee. One week. One cause.” promotion.

Click here to check out this week’s Sevenly tee-shirts that are for sale to benefit CURE.

Sevenly selects one charity each week to feature on their website. Sevenly designs two tee-shirt styles for each charity and sells them for $22 each, and $7 from each shirt sale is donated directly to the charity. This week, Sevenly has chosen CURE! The tee-shirts are made from high-quality, fair trade, American made, tagless “regular-fit” tees from Next Level Apparel.

The two shirt designs are each available for purchase in both men’s and women’s styles and sizes.

The shirts are only available for sale for one week, so there is a limited time for you to order. If you would like to purchase one of Sevenly’s CURE tee-shirts, you must do so before Monday, October 31 at 1:00 pm EST. After that, they’re gone!

We are excited to team up with Sevenly and spread the word nationwide about the work CURE is doing and help raise awareness for childhood cancer!
