Gary Guyton’s Give2Grow Defenders

Over the past couple of weeks we have shared pictures of NFL Linebacker star Gary Guyton at the CURE Childhood Cancer office as well as visiting childhood cancer patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as part of our Open Arms program. We have been doing a lot of planning and are pleased to announce that Gary will be joining us for the 2012 Lauren’s Run and CURE Annual Picnic! Gary shared with us:

As an individual who has been directly impacted by cancer, it is important for me to give back to those families who are affected by this devastating disease. I have personally experienced the effects that cancer can have on families, having had both of my parents fight and beat it. Through those experiences, I learned how important remaining positive and never losing hope is throughout the process.

When I heard about the great works CURE was doing in the childhood cancer community, for not only the children, but also their families, I wanted to get involved. I understand the array of emotions during the transition, and I can only imagine the additional difficulties that come with it affecting a child. I said to myself I want to help raise awareness to the cause of curing childhood cancer any way possible. I understand that being a professional athlete is a privilege, not a right, and with this privilege comes a responsibility to serving those in need. I am committed to doing all that I can to assist CURE in their powerful mission of helping children and their families live the CURE!

We are thrilled that Gary has decided to join us for the 18th Annual Lauren’s Run! Not only will you have a chance to meet Gary at the race, but you are invited to join his 2K run team: Gary Guyton’s Give2Grow Defenders. Any individual who wishes to join his team must pledge to raise a minimum of $100. On race day, those who have met this requirement will be given a team t-shirt and will get to run alongside him in the 2K.

Gary will also be attending the CURE Annual Picnic where his team members will have a chance to:

  • Get in the front of the line to receive a small, toy football signed by Gary
  • Toss a football with this Super Bowl XLVI player

To join Gary’s team, simply register for Lauren’s Run, follow the instructions to set up your individual fundraising page, and when asked to select a team, pick Gary Guyton’s Give2Grow Defenders.

For step-by-step instructions on how to register for Lauren’s Run, click here.

To check out – or make a donation to – Gary Guyton’s personal fundraising page, click here.

We are so grateful that Gary has offered time out of his busy schedule to help CURE. We look forward to watching the Gary Guyton’s Give2Grow Defenders team grow over the next few weeks!

Board Spotlight: Jill Becker

CURE Childhood Cancer is honored to have a diverse and well-connected Board of Directors and we would like our community to get to know them. In this spotlight series we will highlight a board member and share why he or she is dedicated to CURE.

This week, we are pleased to introduce you to one of our newest board members, Jill Becker, a retired Anchor from WXIA TV. Jill shared with us:

Our son Matt was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma at the age of 3. Our story has a happy ending. Matt is a healthy 24 year old looking forward to the rest of his life. I will never forget how incredibly kind and giving people were to our family when he was sick. That caring is the heart and mission of CURE, and that is why this organization has my heart and my commitment. I am honored to be part of CURE and to continue to share this love with these beautiful children and their families as we search for the cure that ends childhood cancer.”

CURE Introduces a New Staff Member

CURE Childhood Cancer is pleased to introduce our new Development Manager, Paula T. Collins. Paula joined the CURE team this month and will focus on the overall management of the stewardship of donors and database, from support for the Annual Campaign to external events and anything in between.

Paula is a native of Atlanta and brings a deep understanding of the overall functions of development and the importance of building and enhancing relationships with donors, prospects, and other constituent groups. Prior to joining CURE, Paula worked most recently for several non-profit independent schools in development, marketing communications, admissions, and database administration.

She is committed to excellence and integrity and will help CURE maximize fundraising opportunities. She believes in the mission and vision for CURE and hopes that her work will somehow positively impact the children who are fighting for their lives every day. In her spare time, Paula is usually cheering on her children at their sporting events. She also enjoys walking, gardening, and baking.

We are so pleased to welcome Paula to the CURE team and look forward to her work to assist in finding a cure for childhood cancer.

We Need your Signature: NIH Petition

CURE Childhood Cancer understands that funding research saves lives. A very important petition was recently submitted to the White House proposing an increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). We support this petition wholeheartedly and ask each of you read this post and sign the petition today. Please help spread the word so the required 25,000 signatures will be obtained.

Funding for the NIH supports a massive, vital engine that improves our nation’s health, advances research, promotes medical education, and generates 1,000,000 jobs, in all 50 states. It has been funded at decreasing (flat or sub-inflationary) rate since 2003. Thousands of promising careers, research projects, and laboratories have been aborted or closed down because of this funding crisis. The proposed flat $30.7 billion budget will bring this crisis to a boiling point. Instead, this petition proposes a $33 billion NIH budget for fiscal year 2013.

In order for a petition to stay active, it must receive 25,000 signatures over a 30-day period. A similar petition was started by Stephen Meltzer from Johns Hopkins and expired on 3/18/12 with 24,554 signatures. The petition was only 446 short. This cannot happen again!

As of right now, the new petition still needs approximately 17,000 signatures. We know how strong the support is in the CURE Community, so we are confident we can help this petition reach 25,000 signatures. We are simply asking each of you to view the petition, create an account, and add your signature.

We can do this!

Update on Gus

A couple of week ago, we shared with you the story of Gus Carrasquillo, told by his mother Erin. If you have yet to read about the amazing Gus, click here to learn about his journey. After reading your comments and discussions after his story was posted, it became clear to us that Gus had just as strong of an impact on you as he did on us. It is with a heavy heart that we are here to deliver the news that Gus has relapsed. While the details of his condition are still being looked at, we want to provide you with this update from Erin.

I was hoping to post good news about Gus’s MRI. Unfortunately, we received some bad news, the cancer is spreading. The tumors that have remained on his spine and scattered throughout his brain have shown some growth. Of course this news is very scary for us and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t terrified of our future. The good news is it is spreading very slowly right now and we have many treatment options. Treatment options include a more aggressive chemo regimen, a new drug in clinical trials specifically designed for medulloblastoma, and proton radiation.

So next for Gus is a spinal tap to check his spinal fluid for free floating cancer cells. This will give us an idea of how aggressive we need to be with his treatment. Thursday Dr. M. will be conferencing with other brain tumor oncologists on Gus’s case. Friday, we will meet back up with her to discuss their recommendations. We are continuing to keep him on his normal chemo regimen until we make any other treatment decisions.

We ask that each of you keep Gus and the Carrasquillo family in your thoughts and prayers.
