HSMAI Chinese Auction to Benefit CURE

The Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International Georgia Chapter (HSMAI-GA) will be hosting an exciting event with a portion of proceeds to benefit CURE Childhood Cancer.

HSMAI Chinese Auction
Thursday, September 20, 2012
6:00 – 10:00 pm
The Fox Theatre
660 Peachtree Street NE
Atlanta, GA 30308
Members register here
Nonmembers register here

Registration includes open bar, passed hors d’oevres, and a three course dinner. Guests are invited to participate in a silent auction during the reception and a Chinese Auction during dinner. As part of the Chinese Auction, each attendee will receive a list of auction items and a numbered paddle. Quarters can be purchased by each attendee to bid on items. Each auction item will be in a bidding category that will range from $.50 to $1.50. The auctioneer will ask each attendee to place their quarters in the bucket, located in the middle of each table, if they would like to bid on the item. If the attendee bids on the item, they hold their numbered paddle in the air. The auctioneer will begin at random calling out the numbers of the people who bid. Meanwhile, a gonger is on the stage and is unaware of what numbers are being called. Whenever the gonger likes, he bangs the gong. The last number called by the auctioneer wins the item. This continues until all the prizes are won.

This event is fast paced and very fun! If your business would like to donate an item to be auctioned off at the event, click here. Auction items typically range in value from $25 to $1500, so any donations are welcomed. The deadline to donate items is September 17th.

CURE Pins to Inspire

CURE Childhood Cancer is now a Pinner! Officially joining Pinterest, a content sharing service that allows members to “pin” images, videos and other objects to their pinboard, CURE has dove head first into the whimsical world of pinning.

Created with the mother in mind, the Pinterest account will serve as a place for daily inspiration, ideas and tips. Boards found on the account range from showcasing CURE’s videos, funded research projects, and upcoming events. However, the true delight will come from the boards that lie outside of the topics surrounding childhood cancer.

Whether followers are looking for fun activities to do with their children, book ideas to read with their kids, or motivational quotes to help them get by through the toughest of days, CURE’s pinboard has a little bit for everyone.

We hope that you will follow, repin, and like what we are sharing. Go ahead, get inspired!

Inspired by a Child, CURE’s Board Member is Dedicated to Finding a CURE

Leslie Zacks is the Vice President of the CURE Childhood Cancer Board of Directors. He is also the Vice President of General Counsel and Chief Compliance Office at Arbor Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

However, his resume does not end there. Leslie is also a future participant in the Augusta Half Ironman Triathlon and is racing to save lives and to cure childhood cancer.

Inspired by Patrick, a young boy who lost his five and a half year battle with neurobslatoma, Leslie was motivated by Patrick’s over-sized smile, perseverance and perspective on life.

Shortly after, Patrick’s friend, Brennan, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Brennan  has been fighting this aggressive form of cancer for over three years. After undergoing four bone marrow transplants, multi-organ failure and numerous stays in the ICU, Brennan has recently returned to school and was able to enjoy a well-deserved summer vacation.

When asked why Leslie has a passion for working with CURE to help put an end to childhood cancer he said, “Children should play. They should not be forced to lie in bed worrying about white blood cell counts, tumor sizes or whether they will see their next birthday. My heart breaks with each diagnosis and I am committed to ensuring that my time, money, sweat and energy will make a difference in this important fight.”

If you are interested in helping Leslie raise money for the families affected by childhood cancer then support him while he attempts to complete a half Ironman triathlon in Augusta, Georgia on September 30th. The event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56-mile bike and then a 13.1 mile run.

“It won’t be easy. The pain and sacrifice I am experiencing during my training and that I will certainly feel on race day are nothing compared to the pain endured by Patrick and Brennan, their families and far too many kids with cancer.”

You can donate to Leslie and his cause by clicking here.

#CUREsKids Twitter Chat

As we all know by now, September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and as the month comes to a close, it is our hope that this is not where the awareness for this terrible disease ends too.

To continue the momentum in preparation for the month  CURE Childhood Cancer is hosting a Twitter chat next Tuesday, August 28th, 2012 at 2:00 pm EST to get everyone talking & raising awareness for the cause. Everyone is invited to participate in the chat – from families to friends, other organizations & healthcare providers, or anyone interested in the cause!

Joining in the chat is easy if you’re on Twitter, and you can follow along with us by searching the #CUREKids hashtag and join in the conversation by simply following along and adding #CUREKids to your tweets. Also, be sure to Follow our Twitter account at @CUREChildCancer!

As we chat, the conversation will wrap around the following questions:

Q1. Why do you support childhood cancer awareness? What has led you to become involved in this cause? #CUREsKids

Q2. What is the best way for friends & families to show their support for a child & family dealing with childhood cancer? #CUREsKids

Q3. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. What will you be doing  to spread awareness? #CUREsKids

Q4. There are many charities out there that support childhood cancer causes. What is your number one reason for choosing which cause to support? #CUREsKids

Q5. Are you blogging or tweeting about childhood cancer in some way? How are you sharing your story? #CUREsKids

We also welcome your support through donations to help fund childhood cancer research this month, and appreciate you taking the time to read about the brave children we are honoring this month as CURE’s Kids Conquer Cancer One Day at a Time!

Board Spotlight: Kevin Kennedy

CURE Childhood Cancer is honored to have a diverse and well-connected Board of Directors and we would like our community to get to know them. In this spotlight series we will highlight a board member and share why he or she is dedicated to CURE.

This week, we are pleased to introduce you to one of our newest board members, Kevin Kennedy, the Vice President of ISG Technology at Morgan Stanley. Kevin shared with us:

“My experience with CURE started shortly after my 18 year old son Joe was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in June, 2007. I had never heard of CURE or the Aflac Cancer Center before that night and we had no experience dealing with a life threatening illness. That was soon to change. Joe was treated at Aflac and eventually sent to the NIH in Bethesda to participate in a clinical trial. We almost lost Joe on two different occasions while we were at the NIH; thankfully he stabilized and slowly improved. Through a family friend, I was able to meet Lauren Gearon. Lauren graciously spoke to my wife and me about her experience with aplastic anemia – she gave us hope. Three months later Joe had recovered enough to try going to college. Lauren was kind enough to meet with Joe – she gave Joe hope. We have been supporters of CURE since that time because CURE gives hope to families facing these horrific childhood illnesses.”

Kickers Kicking Cancer

This 2012 high school football season The Kickers Zone  is “kicking-off” their “Kickers Kicking Cancer Program ™” throughout the United States. This program is designed to raise awareness amongst high school kickers, their high schools, coaches, local businesses and community leaders to make a connection in the fight to “kick” cancer!

Through the program sponsors, supporters of kickers/punters and their local schools can pledge money during the upcoming football season by donating each time a football team scores on an extra point, field goal, or automatic “touchback” when a football is kicked into the end zone!  This year, 100% of the donations will be donated to CURE Childhood Cancer.

If you are a kicker who would like to sign up for the program you can contact Paula at paula@curechildhoodcancer.org or 770.986.0035 ext. 23.

More Than Bakers, These Publix Ladies Are True Humanitarians

The ladies who work in the bakery for the Publix Super Market in the Wade Green Village Shopping Center in Kennesaw are very good at baking. However, what most don’t know, is that the ladies in the Publix bakery add a little sweetness to the days of many children battling cancer at the Aflac Cancer Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta‘s Scottish Rite and Egleston campuses.

For over six years, on Monday and Wednesday mornings, the ladies have baked goodies for CURE Childhood Cancer to bring to children visiting the Aflac Cancer Center for cancer treatment or follow up care. Parents and their children, nurses and volunteers all know that when a liaison from CURE’s Patient & Family Services arrives that she will have a package of muffins, cookies, cupcakes and more!

“What little heroes these children are,” observe the Publix staff. “We know that when we are baking for CURE, we are baking for the children who are going through things they should never face. We are so happy to be able to do this for CURE and for the children.”

We want to thank these Publix ladies for their continuous years of support. Some of these children might consider the baked goods as part of their therapy, and what could be sweeter than that?
