Team Silas Day Raises Almost $1400 for CURE!

By now you may have heard of a little boy named Silas. Faced with a very tough road ahead of him, his joyous spirit and positive attitude has been an inspiration for many. On April 29th, Larry’s Giant Subs in Vidalia, GA hosted “Team Silas Day” in order to show their support of both Silas and finding a cure for pediatric cancer. For the entire day, 20% of sales were donated to CURE Childhood Cancer.

With sea turtles being Silas’s favorite animal, the restaurant provided “Team Silas” sea turtle coloring sheets for children as well as candy and prizes. Jeanette Wiggins of Larry’s Giant Subs says, “We are thrilled it was a success and feel so blessed being able to give to such a good cause.”

From this event, Larry’s Giant Subs raised $1,393.23! Thank you to the staff of Larry’s Giant Subs as well as the Vidalia community for honoring Silas and supporting CURE’s efforts to end this disease once and for all.

Dinner for Silas Raises Over $5,000

Last December, the Eta Rho Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma volunteered at CURE’s Holiday Celebration Party in Savannah and left the event with a new-found awareness of the work that CURE Childhood Cancer does with our families every day.

It was there that the Tri Sigmas first met Silas and began to follow his Facebook Page.

Silas In love with his encouraging spirit and wonderful family, the Tri Sigmas were devastated to learn that Silas was out of treatment options and would soon be under the care of hospice.  As a result, they reached out to the family with the offer of a fundraiser and, upon the family’s request, turned Dinner for Silas into a way to raise money for CURE.

Catie Sykes, the Tri Sigma who coordinated the dinner in April, worked very hard to pull off an event, for the entire community, that would raise awareness and funding for CURE.  Generously, Matt Starling, the owner of Smoke Station BBQ in Savannah, offered to host the event and help defray costs so that every penny could go to CURE.

According to Sykes, the Eta Rho Chapter of Tri Sigma has now made it their mission to raise money to fund childhood cancer research in honor of Silas. “Honestly, he is the wisest 4 year old I have ever seen. Especially with the types of things he’s been dealing with, you would never be able to tell because, honestly, he just radiates light,” says Sykes.

Silas People were lining the sidewalk outside the restaurant before the doors even opened, including those who were caregivers to Silas from The Children’s Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center, students who know the Tri Sigmas, families that CURE supports through our patient and family services programming, and locals who heard about the dinner through social media outlets and the local news stations.  While Silas is under the care of hospice and could not come, his family was represented by his aunt Amber and older brother, Gideon.

We would like to personally thank everyone who helped spread awareness of Silas and this fundraising dinner. As a result of your support, Tri Sigma was able to raise $5,100 for childhood cancer research!

Gratitude, Gratitude, Gratitude! Nothing But Gratitude!

We never cease to be completely amazed and humbled by the response of the CURE community to the needs of the children and families we serve. In December, you showed us your determination to support our families, to ensure children with cancer and their brothers and sisters did not miss out on special experiences because of a cruel disease and to make sure gifts were under the tree on Christmas morning or plentiful during Hanukkah celebrations. You provided holiday gifts for a record number of families this year – 46 in all!  You provided gifts to families throughout the state – 15 in Savannah and south Georgia, 8 in the Augusta area and 23 in the metro Atlanta area. We wish you had been able to share in the tears of gratitude, the humility of parents who just could not have managed the holidays on their own this year…the families were truly overwhelmed by your generosity and love. On behalf of each of these precious families, we thank you.

The Tylka family, generous supporters of CURE, provided an extra special day for some CURE families by inviting them to the St. Regis Atlanta for a day of ice skating, s’mores, hot chocolate and more! The ice rink was full of laughing children and parents alike as the Tylka’s children and grandchildren stood ready to help with any need, ensuring everyone had a fantastic time. The families were surprised by a very special visit from Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus who took pictures with the children and cheered them on as they skated.

Holiday parties were held in both Atlanta and Savannah thanks to the Opera Event Center and the Andaz Hotel.  Literally hundreds of volunteers devoted countless hours to planning and putting on grand holiday celebrations and creating a wonderful memorable experience for more than 100 families.

Also in December, nearly 250 brave runners took to the road wearing festive speedos in the Atlanta Santa Speedo Run. They raised more than $85,000 for CURE! Wow! Stone Mountain donated tickets for a number of families to enjoy Snow Mountain. Generosity abounds!

In addition, you supported our work with your donations at record levels. Giving to CURE has increased from this time last year. Your generous giving is what enables us to serve families all year long. Your giving is what fuels the research our Scientific Advisory Council has identified as some of the most promising and important work being done.

Each of us at CURE is filled with gratitude for each of you. We are so thankful you choose to walk with us and fight for children with cancer. Happy New Year!

CURE Welcomes Jonathan Bender

We’re excited to announce CURE Childhood Cancer’s latest partner: former NBA star Jonathan Bender. When we first spoke with Jonathan about his interest in CURE, we knew he would be an amazing friend to add to our network of supporters.

We asked Jonathan, “Why did you decide to get involved with CURE?” He said:

“My fiancé is a cancer survivor and we have always wanted to support children and the families inflicted by cancer. My Manager, Robert Reed, told me about CURE Childhood Cancer and their mission. The more I learned about their mission, combined with the number of children who are diagnosed with the disease each year as well as what little funding is available, I decided to support CURE. I am thankful to be a part of the CURE family as it allows me to use my foundation and the game I love to help raise awareness for a cause that I am passionate about.”

Jonathan recently came to the NBC 11Alive studio to film a new commercial spot. Check it out:

CURE’s Executive Director Kristin Connor has nothing but kind words to say about Jonathan: “CURE is thrilled to have the support of former NBA star Jonathan Bender. Jonathan’s drive to help find a cure for pediatric cancer is evident from the first time you meet him. We thank Jonathan for taking the time to film CURE’s latest television commercials and are looking forward to further work with him in the future.”

Thank you for your support, Jonathan!

“A Tribute to Our Quiet Heroes” Marks its 8th Year

You could hear it…the sound of the beginning of the 8th annual “A Tribute to our Quiet Heroes” luncheon.  The laughter, the expressions of joy at seeing familiar faces, the sounds of wonder from first-timers…and it was time.

The 2012 “A Tribute to our Quiet Heroes” was held at the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead on September 29th and hosted by the gracious and generous Chris Glavine. This day, for the moms of children whose lives have been touched by cancer, is not only a day to dress up and be pampered, but also a day to experience and celebrate the community of moms and supporters.

The day’s meaning is best described by the moms who attended. One said, “It was a wonderful, beautiful, emotionally phenomenal afternoon. I cannot thank you enough for doing all that you do and providing us cancer moms a chance for sisterhood away from the nightmare in which we live. You all are angels among us.

Jill Becker, Quiet Hero, retired 11-Alive news anchor and CURE Board member, emceed the event.  Joshua Goodling, a 38 year survivor of “terminal” childhood cancer, inspired the audience with his story of survival and overcoming adversity. Joshua is a successful professional and SURVIVOR and provided the Quiet Heroes in attendance with such hope and inspiration.

At the end of the day, nearly $330,000 was raised to advance research into better treatments and cures for cancers affecting children.  It was a day to remember, a day to hope, a day to believe.

Here are some photos from the event:

In Support of CURE, Board of Director to Compete in Ironman

Seth Gibree, on the Board of Directors for CURE Childhood Cancer, has committed to raise money for CURE by competing in the Florida Ironman, a Triathlon consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and a 26.2 mile run in November.

Seth became involved with CURE because he strongly believes that all children deserve the chance to enjoy life, to be free of worry, and to discover their dreams. As the father of two young boys, he appreciates the importance of running around outside, riding bikes, and simply playing (dirt optional)! He truly believes that kids shouldn’t have to worry about hospitals, tumors, and big words they can’t pronounce.

“The effort, and sacrifice my family and I will experience during my training and that I will certainly deal with is NOTHING compared to the pain endured by far too many kids and families having to deal with childhood cancer. “

Seth is committed to Ironman so that kids can get back to doing what they do best… just being kids.

You can donate to Seth and his cause by clicking here.

Finding a CURE Through Music

In 2011 Ryan Burton was living what most would consider a normal life—spending time with his wife and helping raise his stepdaughter, Callie. Then, in September the family was blindsided by the news of doctors being told Callie had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

“My wife and I never saw it coming,” said Ryan. “Life changed in a heartbeat. We spent the next six months in a hospital living every parent’s nightmare.”

In an international effort to help raise money to fund research and find a cure for childhood cancer, Ryan began a music-based charity movement Sometimes You Gotta Fight. The song is a collaboration between Ryan and Canadian songwriter/producer VANN.

Two decades ago, Ryan Burton was a full-time musician in Canada performing in popular Montreal rock band I.C. RED. Now a US citizen living in Georgia, he felt music could be the ideal messenger and reached out to his old band mate. The two reunited to write and record music together for the first time in 20 years. The result was Sometimes You Gotta Fight. Burton has also started SONGS CURE CANCER to inspire other bands and artists to get involved in the fight by recording songs and playing shows to raise funds for the cause.

“Your first reaction is to shut the world out and focus on your family,” reflects Burton. “But a beautiful little girl is alive today because of all the research that existed before she got sick. Now that she is doing well, my wife and I felt like we had to pay it forward – even if it meant sharing a very private story.”

The song, Sometimes You Gotta Fight can be downloaded on iTunes for 99¢ and all proceeds will go directly to CURE Childhood Cancer.

“This movement is about doing a little bit for a big result,” explains VANN. “We’re all busy and have limits on what we can do. But we’re only asking people to download a song for 99¢ and forward an email to friends so that they can do the same. That’s all it takes for you to save lives. Don’t wait until cancer comes into your life to start making a difference.”
